Handcrafted goods

We are a small business based in sunny South Africa.
Crocheting and knitting have always been our big passion and have played a massive role in our household as somewhat of a hobby that has been passed through from generation to generation. (Thank you, Ouma Nellie, for all those crochet hooks!)
However, what once was a hobby became a prospect of what could be – an opportunity to use our passion to create environmentally friendly homemade items crafted with precision and care, thereby creating Necta.
Why Necta?
So, let me tell you a story…
Over Christmas, we have a family gift-giving tradition of giving homemade gifts. From November onwards, there is the hustle and bustle to look for ideas and get the creative juices flowing.
One Christmas, not so long ago, my husband and I were at the Arts & Crafts shop (Thank you, Jimnettes!). They had Melt ‘n Pour soap on display, so we devised the idea of making handmade soap gifts for everybody.
Countless YouTube videos later, we decided we wanted to go as natural as possible. We made everyone the cutest little honey hand soaps – in the shape of a beehive – in equal-sided hexagon shapes (my husband created the soap moulds with his 3D printer). However, soap making wasn’t quite my passion; it’s not something I had ever done before or that was prevalent in our family.
Sometime later, I was looking for something to keep myself busy with. I discovered some left-over wool and the crochet hooks my Ouma had left me. I started crocheting again. A big shout-out to my husband and daughter for inspiring me to Just Do It! 💟
The cute honey soaps and the idea of bees (we have a Bee Hotel on our front porch) kind of stuck with me as we searched for a name. As you may already know, bees are instrumental in crop pollination. And honey is so delicious (especially with a good cuppa tea).
And so Necta was born.
Necta stems from the word nectar
/ˈnɛktə/
noun
- a sugary fluid secreted within flowers encourages pollination by insects and other animals, collected by bees to make into honey.
- (in Greek and Roman mythology) the drink of the gods.
